Babies, Life, and Being a Nerd

Trying to balance an online presence while being a father and a friend isn’t always easy. Finding a balance between being a good husband, father, friend, and blogger is a difficult balance to maintain. Most of the time my online identity is what falls behind but that is ok, because that is the priority I have set in life. My family comes first and with my newborn baby girl, I have not been able to do much lately, and my friends come second but I am sure they feel that is a distant second. I try to do as much as I can with my Nerd Management brothers but alas I fall behind. Luckily they understand as well.

The good thing about an online blog is that it will always be there no matter how many times you quit and then go back. It always waits for you just sitting there waiting for you to tell it what you want to say. Some people have a lot to say and some people have a little. Some people have followers that care and some people just put words into the vastness of space. Either way, its there waiting for you.

A lot has happened since the last time I blogged and we will see what I have to say and how much I will be able to say it in the coming time. Just a reminder for those who remember, http://www.nerdmgmt.com is no longer around but we can be found on soundcloud with season 7 coming up and on facebook as Nerd Management.

Deadpool Movie Review

For a movie that was made for fans this movie stands up on its own two feet. This movie has teeth and uses them to bite its way into your hearts. Normally a movie made solely for fan service you would not expect such a high caliber movie, but Deadpool hits on all cylinders and gives you all out extreme violence, vulgarity, nudity, bloodshed, humor and everything else we all wanted from this movie. Ask and ye shall receive.

The test footage we all saw 2 and a half years ago, starts out the film with some additions that make it even more fantastic. The slow motion action scenes really drive home the feeling of a panel by panel sequence from the comic books.  The constant 4th Wall breaking, really brings Deadpool to life. There are a few points in the movie where you would think that it might get a little repetitive but it bails itself out with a hilarious joke or gratuitous violence and you forget Wade has been talking just to you for a few moments.

The amount of Easter Eggs and references to other Marvel and Fox properties is enormous and not at all overwhelming. They are all well placed and well written. There are aspects of Deadpool and the people he surrounds himself with from every era of Deadpool from the Comics. There are strong ties to Fabian Nicieza with Ajax being the main villain, Joe Kelly with Weasel and Blind Al, Gail Simone with the overarching love story, Victor Gischler with the vulgarity and the Team Up aspect with Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus, Jason Aaron with the nudity and violence, and Daniel Way’s way of making Deadpool seem insane but his plans always work out in the end. If anything this movie was a great homage to all of the people who have defined Deadpool.

This movie is as much Ryan Reynolds as it is Rob Liefield and it is a true tribute to the fans because it has everything you could have asked for. The origin in this movie is pretty close to the Minus One, One Shot that came out about 12 years ago but we are missing some important players such as Dr. Killebrew but easily substituted for him was Ajax as the mastermind. Having the X-Men in this movie was amazing, but then to find out it is only Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead at first was a bummer until it wasn’t. By far NTW stole the show with those 2 and Colossus really held his own as a leader.

Deadpool went from this 1 shot villain in the pages of a dying franchise of New Mutants to a headlining name in the Marvel Comics roster. Showing up on the second issue of the Newly launched X-Force facing off against Weapon X Garrison Kane, and making a huge name for himself Deadpool was a hit. Little by little, year by year he got more appearances and more books. He has grown as a character exponentially until he is the pure gold minting character that drives people to cosplay by the thousands every year at conventions around the world. Deadpool is a phenomenon and this movie is an homage to his fans, Every. Last. One.

As a true fan, from the beginning. As a 1st grader who picked up New Mutants 98 off of a turnstile at an IGA in Jamestown, IN. I whole-heartedly give Deadpool a 10/10 and recommend all of you to go see it as well.

Monday Morning 9 to 5: Software Developer

From Nine to Five: Super Powers, Normal Jobs

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have super powers? Yep me too, but what would it be like if the people in our every day lives had super powers too? What if it were so mundane and ordinary that everyone on Earth had a power and they had to go on living their everyday lives like it were no big deal? What current comic book superheroes would be best suited for normal blue collar jobs? That is the question at hand and each Monday I will bring you a different job that people hold everyday and I will suggest a few different Superheroes and/ or Villains that would be best suited for those jobs. I hope you enjoy, because this weeks job is:

Software Developer

  • Reviewing current systems
  • Presenting ideas for system improvements, including cost proposals
  • Working closely with analysts, designers and staff
  • Producing detailed specifications and writing the program codes
  • Testing the product in controlled, real situations before going live
  • Preparation of training manuals for users
  • Maintaining the systems once they are up and running

What current superhero or villain would suit this position best? Hmmm. I have a pretty good Idea who I think would make a great Software Developer? Brainiac? Danger? no, I am thinking more along the lines of Forge from the X-Men!

Forge, from the X-Men, has the mutant ability to understand machines. He has the ability to create anything he can think of and that would come in very handy if he were a software designer for a large company. Forge would be the ultimate IT guy, no matter what problem you or your company have with their systems Forge can create a program to fix it. He could also build you a network out of any electronics he could find.

Imagine hackers attacking your company and there was nothing you could do to stop it. All you would have to do is call Forge and he would create a software to counteract the attack without even skipping a beat. This would save you and your company millions and millions of dollars. All Forge would have to do is collect buckets of cash. So next time you are going over the software any anything you have purchased, maybe Forge could have made it better.

Forge Forge working hard on that new Anti-Virus Software you asked for!

[Speculation] Did Fox Change the Final Cut of FF on Purpose?

So based on current numbers compared to projected numbers on the opening days of the Fox movie The Fantastic Four directed by now embroiled director Josh Trank (Chronicle), some might speculate that Fox could have something up their sleeve. Based on the tweet by Trank, that was quickly deleted, that says:

trank

It seems as if Fox was not ready to put what he made into the world. Why is that. What would Fox have to gain from this? Well Fox is currently in negotiations to produce an X-Men TV Series based on their movie universe. As we found out earlier the TV rights are not as easy to interpret as the movie rights that Marvel sold 20 years ago. So how would Fox bring any leverage to the table? What about a dead franchise, whose movie just completely tanked to start off its box office run?

Fox could leverage their Mutant Universe and go “all-in” on the X-Men by offering that never acclaimed Fantastic Four movies up as tempting fodder to the almighty Disney-Marvel Gods.

Again, pure speculation, but what do you think?

Marvel v. DC: A War on Your TV

Marvel v. DC: A War on Your TV

There is a war going on, a war that has spilled over into our living rooms. A war between to heated and bitter rivals. Two rivals competing for one thing and one thing only, your money. DC and Marvel have been at odds for decades. Each one stealing writers, artists, and ideas from one another just to gain some sort of advantage over the other. Sure at certain times there have been armistices and even peace, but that time is long since past. The current battle of this war is playing out on both the Silver Screen in Hollywood and the small screens in our own homes.

DC and Marvel have one thing in common when it comes to vying for your dollars, and that is they are both owned and backed by Billion Dollar corporations such as Warner Brothers and Disney; who have been at war as long as DC and Marvel have. Neither company will stop until all avenues of Entertainment have been explored to bring your their content and try to get your eyes to watch their programming. That is one huge reason why the winners of this war will not be sitting in a board room, nor on a yacht somewhere surrounded by more money they they can handle. No the real winners of this war is us, because we are in the Golden Age of Comic Book Entertainment Television and Movies and its only getting better.

Both companies are going about their TV shows differently. Like everything Marvel does all of their TV Shows are linked to their movies in one huge Marvel Cinematic Universe. While DC keeps their large and small screen media separate from one another; this isn’t necessarily a bad thing however. While Marvel allows you to imagine the world around you as ever enveloping and connecting every little tidbit of information to see one huge picture, DC allows you to disconnect Movie characters from TV allowing you to enjoy the stories for themselves instead of having to worry about continuity errors you can just enjoy the ride.

Marvel started their TV Franchise of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a spin-off onto TV from their movie The Avengers. This allowed the viewers to continue with the world from the movies with different stories rooted in the same Universe as the characters you just watched in the theaters. Season 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. got off to a rocky start but rebounded very well and ended up with good enough ratings to illicit a 2nd season and get it’s own spin-off show Marvel’s Agent Carter which takes place after the events of the Captain America: The First Avenger movie.

Marvel’s Agent Carter and season 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. both have been well received in the ratings, yet panned by die hard fans who are rooted in the comic books. The success of both shows and the wide success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole has given Marvel the green-light to team up with Netflix to bring us 5, 13 episode series surrounding the lives of 4 heroes in New York City in the events immediately after the Battle of New York from The Avengers.

Daredevil, which just came out on Friday April 10th, 2015, and was watched so much that it crashed the Netflix servers; is the first installment of The Defenders series on Netflix from Marvel. The Defenders will be the team of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage with the last 3 getting their own 13 episode seasons before The Defenders TV Show airs in 2018. All of these along with the ABC Marvel shows are connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe which allows us to follow one big story being told to us.

DC is doing things a little differently they are keeping their Movie Universe separate from their very popular TV Universe. There are a few reasons that they are doing this and not going the route of Marvel and connecting everything. First off they probably don’t want to seem like they are copying Marvel’s successful business model by connecting the universes. Secondly they don’t really need to. The current movie universe is going to be huge, and will allow us to see a wide array of stars gracing the screens from Hollywood to form the Justice League and the villains that they hunt; while the very popular TV Franchises allow us to expand on the current universe they are using which doesn’t seem like it allows for a Super-Man or Batman to exist.

Arrow is currently in season 3 on The CW and we have watched Oliver Queen grow in these 3 years to a great hero, we are deeply invested in him and his team. The widely regarded spin-off from Arrow is The Flash also on The CW which has actually gained more ratings in its first year then Arrow has in seasons 1 and 2. What does this tell us? That DC has a great way of telling 2 different stories without having to rely on either medium to hold the others hand.

DC actually also has 2 other TV shows on 2 other networks and neither of them are attached to each other, the Arrow universe, or the DC Movie Universe as well. Gotham on FOX which is a retelling of the Batman story and Constantine on NBC which was rumored to have been in the Movie Universe or possibly in the Arrow universe on The CW but wasn’t around long enough to have that narrative told too us. Both of these shows have a huge cult following but one was stuck in a dead Friday 10pm slot and the other was given a prime Monday night slot. While the current status of Constantine is mostly likely (but not confirmed) Cancelled the state of Gotham is great. Gotham looks to have a second season order confirmed in the very near future which just adds to the greatness that is DC Television.

Now Marvel has a Untitled Spin-Off coming from season 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and CBS is bring us the DC show Supergirl which is supposed to be linked to The CW’s Arrow Universe. Both shows are showing huge buzz already online and are highly anticipated by all fans of TV and Movies. With all of these new shows and current TV shows from both companies getting better and better each season. One begs the questions, who is winning the war? Is is Marvel with its huge connected universe or DC with its 1 huge and many smaller multiverses? Don’t forget it is us, the fans, who are winning this war. We are reaping the benefits of these 2 gigantic media companies that are vying for our attentions and money. This war is not ending any time soon, and we should be very happy for that fact.
